Our Thing (Cosa Nostra) performance

«Our Thing» is a performance where the exterior of a Zastava 101 automobile will be cemented into a single form, whose lower edge will reach all the way to the floor, giving it an almost regular geometric shape. This performance will be staged with two construction workers, emigrants from the former Yugoslavia living and working in Austria. I met them at the corner of the MUMOK on my way to the meeting with the Museum Director to discuss the concept of this exhibition. They were pouring concrete along the passageway between the building of the MUMOK and the Imperial Stables. I asked them if they were interested in helping me to cement a car in the exhibition I was to arrange, and they accepted. The cemented car form may be seen as the petrified conscience of society. The participation of «other», nonartistic subjects in the implementation of the project indicates the necessity to activate and involve members or elements of society in order to change social conscience on a broader scale by means of art.
