Installation
«Social Orthopedics» is a work of art consisting of safety belts taken from cars and attached to a gallery or museum wall. They are arranged in a single series, starting with a reproduction of the drawing «Social Orthopedics», or how to modify children’s behaviour by Nicolas Andry, which Michel Foulcault included in the reproductions in his book «Discipline and Punish», in the chapter on the subject of discipline. Discipline begins with spatial distribution of individuals. To that end, it uses several methods. There are instances when discipline requires enclosing an area, isolating a place that will be special in comparison to all other places and confined so as to represent a world by itself. This is a protected area of monotonous disciplining.[1]
This work questions the possibility of using art as an instrument of discipline, where the position of a work of art in relation to an individual borders between an end and a tool.
